Insights: Gaba Tea

Everyone is talking about Gaba Tea, searching the Internet it is easy to find results such as: Gaba, a valuable ally for health or Gaba: a tea leaf to regain balance. Is it really so? Let’s find out together!

To continue in this analysis we need to digest some complex words: γ-aminobutyric acid. The name of this chemical compound is: gamma-aminobutyric acid. You may need to read this name twice, and perhaps twice more to remember it.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid is the inhibitory neurotransmitter of the human central nervous system. In other words, it is a substance that balances our mood and emotions. Gamma-aminobutyric acid was discovered in the middle of the last century. It has been used in pharmacology ever since.

Our body is a wise chemical plant because it independently develops everything it needs, in optimal amounts.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid, like so many other substances, is produced in optimal and appropriate amounts for the situation. But if something goes wrong, the problems begin….

Gaba Tea as process

Stress, alcohol, mental fatigue, all of these lead toward deficiency. So insomnia, excessive anxiety, neurosis. We become easily irritable, and it’s hard to calm down. Probably any of us find ourselves in one or two of these conditions. On a chemical level, gamma-aminobutyric acid is partially involved in this degenerative process.

In the 1980s, some Japanese scientists developed a technology for processing tea, which makes it possible to obtain a final product with a higher content of usable gamma-aminobutyric acid. Technically, this process is quite simple. During the fermentation phase, the tea leaf is placed in a sealed metal chamber and air is pumped in. Soon after, nitrogen is introduced into the chamber and the magic begins, lasting 9-10 hours. Gamma-aminobutyric acid is synthesized in the tea leaf.

Gaba tea can become red, green, yellow, Oolong or puer tea thanks to recent fermentation technologies. If in the production process there is a stage where fermentation takes place in a chamber without oxygen, such tea can be called “Gaba”. And this tea should theoretically have unique properties.

It is important to understand that “Gaba tea” is not a certain kind of tea, but a technological moment which can be applied to any variety of leaves.
